DIAS – Disability Information and Advisory Services

Overview

A person with a disability has been defined by the Ministry of Health as someone who has been assessed as having a physical, intellectual or sensory impairment, with the disability likely to continue for a minimum of 6 months and resulting in a person being unable to live independently without support.

The role of Disability Information and Advisory Services (DIAS) is:

  • To provide information on a range of disability support services available from the Ministry of Health
  • To provide information on how to access that support
  • To provide information about services that are available within the community

In addition to being an advisory service for people with long term disabilities, DIAS works with Community Link i.e. WINZ, including Disability Allowance, overseas pensions, Housing NZ, applications for mobility scooters and grants through the Lottery Grants Commission. The service works with other health professionals and community groups e.g. hearing liaison, and provides information on dental care.

The target group includes:

  • People under 65 with disabilities
  • Those over 65, who are also Community Card holders 
  • Kaumātua

Benefits of the service include:

  •  The prevention of isolation for kaumātua with mobility issues
  •  Helping kaumātua live independently, with support, to keep them safe in their homes and in the community
  •  Assisting those who have difficulty doing everyday tasks because of their disability
  •  Supporting people who do not like asking for help

Referral Process

Referrals are accepted from:

  •  GPs and Nurses
  •  Other health professionals e.g. Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists.
  •  Self-referrals and referrals from whānau
  •  Internal referrals
